Motivate Monday #5 Chore Charts

Today I want to share with you our chore chart (and you can tweak it as needed). We 100% believe in free range parenting, and fully encourage the kids here to independently self manage as much as possible. We also despise hovering over them and micromanaging. After many trials and errors, we came up with a revolving chore list to address specific tasks on weeks that everyone is here, and weeks that just the older three kids are here. They all know what and when they are responsible for certain things. We DO NOT remind them. If they forget to get their chores done? Electronics go 👋🏼 buh-bye!

It is SUPER important for all of the kids to help out around the house. Number one reason? I don’t throw my dirty socks in the living room or tuck them in between the couch cushions. Never have I ever done that! Basically, it’s not my job to clean up after these guys 🤷🏼‍♀️ Mike and I work full time to pay the bills and pay for all of their activities and sports, I am not about to spend my free time playing housekeeper!

We also do not pay the kids for completing chores. Maintaining the house (and yard) lies on the responsibility of all who live here. Believe me when I say our kids most certainly do not go without. But the also need to chip in! It’s important for them to learn basic housekeeping skills (they also have to help cook dinner one night a week so they can’t blame us for not knowing how to cook when they move out 😂) and home maintainence tasks.

Our big chore days are Sundays (before the school week starts) and Thursdays (the day before everyone rotates to their other parents’). We do it this way so we’re starting the ‘weeks’ fresh. And, this house can only go 3-4 days in between deep cleanings. For real.

I encourage you to tailor this to your own family! I know at first it seems like more work, but having a plan will save so much time later on. It is important for kids to have responsibility and for them to learn some basic housekeeping skills.

I’ve included a basic printable below 👇🏼 so you can personalize as needed!

Today, I am grateful that Mike and I have put in the work and are starting to see some fruit from our labor!

Enjoy! Please like, share, and comment. I appreciate the love! 🥰

  1. Love your chore chart……back when my boys were young it was empty the garbage and mow the lawn. They got out of the lawn job when their Dad didn’t like the way they did it. He took over instead of showing them the right way. I have to plead guilty too. The boys did cook dinner sometimes and both liked to cook when theY got older. They were actually better housekeepers too. I’m too nit picky according to them……but that’s okay. Every personality does things differently and do not think the same. Thank God….

Take care….I enjoy your blogs even if I’m too old now for your advice…..just wish I had your advice back in my day….Donna
