WHAT’S YOUR WHY? Finding YOUR Motivation

From our Motivate Monday series

Hi, everyone! I know typically I’ve been sharing organization/routine information with you, but today I’d like to talk a bit about purpose. Because if we don’t have a purpose, then what’s the point for anything else??

This guy, Eric Thomas, is Mike’s jam. Listening to him, feeling his energy, is a natural high for him. We frequently listen to his talks in the car.

What is YOUR why? Are you the giselle, running as fast as you can just to survive? Or are you the lion, running to FEAST? To be on top? To WIN?

Do you wake up every morning already tired and do the bare minimum to get by? Giving 30% to your family, to your job, to life because that’s all you’ve got?

Or do you get up ready to WIN? Do you say “who cares if I’m tired? I’ve got shit to do today!” And hit the ground running?!

Where does your motivation come from? Are you driven to provide for your family, to pay the bills, to put food on the table? Or do you want to be YOUR BEST? Do you want to be better than you were yesterday?

If your family is your motivation, if your spouse is your motivation, you are going to become bitter, resentful, and angry. It’s exhausting for them to be your ‘why’ and they can’t fuel your drive, because they don’t know what motivates you!

When we’re in it for others, or to beat others, we are eventually going to run out of steam. We are going to feel defeated. And we are going to lose.

I am only in competition with myself. Not my neighbor, not my best friend, not the girls at work. I want to be my best, and you can bet I’m going to cheer them on to be their best also.

Your WHY needs to come from within. You need to dig deep down within yourself and find your purpose. And if you don’t know what that is, that’s okay, because we’re going to find it, friends.

Strength

What are your strengths? What are you good at? Make a list! Are you excellent at math? Design? Art? Baking? Goal-setting? Write them all down! If you’re great at organizing things, write it down! We’re just brain storming right now.

What do people compliment you on? What comes naturally to you? What are you typically assigned to in a group project or often volunteered to be in charge of? Don’t hold back, this is not the time to be modest.

Passion

What are you passionate about? What could you do all day, every day, and still be hungry to do more? Make another list! What excites you? What could you talk to someone about for hours and hours? Write it down!

Do you love building things with your hands? Creating something with fabric, or baking with ingredients? Do you enjoy solving puzzles? Do you enjoy throwing parties, or organizing fundraisers?

I hope you’re starting to see a pattern here.. Are there any commonalities between your lists? I hope so. Let’s keep going!

Purpose

This is where we bring it all back… This is where we can find your WHY. What do you excel at, that you are also passionate about? This is your purpose. Your why. And it’s totally okay that your why is different from what it was five years ago, or even last year. We are constantly evolving, so it makes sense that our purpose will periodically change.

When I first divorced, my why was becoming financially independent and providing for myself. Now, my why has evolved into using my experience and past to help and encourage others (which is WHY I created this blog! ☺️).

Find something you love to do, and do it to feed your soul.
