Well, we are on our last night of camping.
I could make it sound like I was writing home from the trenches of the battlefield, and I would not be wrong.
On our first full day, Mike threatened to tear down camp twice and we instituted the plank rule – for every negative comment, the boys had to do a plank for a minute.
I suppose we should not be surprised that they were unable to help carry things down to the lake the next day.
We both realized how heavily we rely on the older two kids that did not come on this camping trip (work and sports commitments), and missed them terribly. We also learned how much easier to is to go camping with two less kids, so I feel like we broke even there.
After Plank Day, the kids did pretty well. Have I mentioned how much we LOVE camping at Joseph Stewart State Park? The kids all rode bikes, scooters, enjoyed the playground, and made new friends.
We had corn hole tournaments, read books, and just relaxed. The boys found tons of blackberry bushes, and Tim frequently disappeared to gather his own food.
After two years with the RV, I feel like we have worked out a lot of the kinks. We know what meals work the best, we learned what supplies are handy and which are not.
Things we love:
- A water filter for the hose – no more wasted plastic water bottles!!
- Having a second set of everything – after the cleanup, it is sooo nice not having to pack and repack the entire RV.
- A cordless vacuum and swiffer mop
- Astro turf to go by the doors
- RV friendly t.p.
- Yard toys – we have corn hole, pickle ball, etc.
- Card games and board games. We have a zero electronics rule when camping, so we stock up on stuff to keep the kids busy. Before I headed to the campsite, I stopped at Barnes and Noble and picked out a book for each kid – they LOVED reading before bed. Best idea ever.
Things we didn’t care for:
- The second set of dishes. Maybe for a smaller family it would work, but it is a pain in the butt to hand wash everything three times a day in the tiny sink in the tiny kitchen without full hookups. Paper plates and disposable cutlery for the win.
- The TVs. Those were the first to go. Disconnecting is one of the biggest reasons we enjoy camping!
- Oddly enough, the slider that separated the garage. We’ve been making some modifications as we go, and since we use the garage as a bedroom for the boys (double queen bunks, whoop whoop!) it actually prevented a lot of air circulation for them. Our next RV we will definitely skip the door on.
- The dining table. Again, probably the amount of people we have crammed in there, but it was totally nonfunctional for us. We bring tablecloths for the outdoor picnic tables and are good to go.
